Combining surveys and digital trace data: rethinking data quality

Coordinator 1Professor Annamaria Bianchi (University of Bergamo)
Coordinator 2Dr Camilla Salvatore (Utrecht University)

Session Details

Digital Trace Data (DTD) - such as GPS records, web tracking data, social media posts, and scraped web content - is nowadays considered a complement to traditional surveys, able to offer new information or better capture behaviours that are difficult to measure through self-reports alone. This includes, for example, travel behaviour, web browsing activity, and political opinion and engagement captured through social media analysis, among others. However, analysing DTD and combining it with survey data raises important issues about data quality: the quality of each individual source, and the quality of the resulting combined statistic. This session welcomes presentations on data quality issues in DTD and combined survey-DTD analyses, including conceptual frameworks, applications and approaches for assessing the quality of combined estimates.
