Mind the Gap: Addressing Coverage and Nonresponse through Sampling and Weighting

Coordinator 1Professor Sabine Zinn (German Institute for Economic Research / SOEP)
Coordinator 2Dr Hans Walter Steinhauer (Institute for Economic Research / SOEP)

Session Details

In an era of declining response rates, fragmented data sources, and limited transparency among data providers, sampling design and weighting as two of the cornerstones of reliable survey based population inference, face increasing challenges. To meet these challenges, this session focuses on methodological advances in sampling design, sample evaluation, and weighting for cross-sectional and longitudinal surveys. Particular emphasis is placed on addressing undercoverage, nonresponse bias, and the integration of external or non-probability data. We invite contributions on both established and innovative approaches to sampling, coverage assessment, and weighting that support valid inference in survey research.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- From probability to hybrid: evaluating sampling frames, registers and alternative recruitment strategies (such as social media) for probability and non-probability sampling.
- From design to sample: design weighting for non-random samples, analyses of response propensities and selection mechanisms and their consequences for survey estimates and statistical inference.
- From sample to population: empirical evaluation of coverage bias using registers and external data source, as well as methods for identifying, quantifying, and mitigating coverage bias.
- Longitudinal and panel weighting: methodological developments for addressing panel attrition and other time-varying response processes, as well as evaluations of longitudinal weighting models and their implications for substantive analyses.

In this session we want to bring together researchers working on sampling and weighting in diverse survey contexts to discuss different methodological approaches, share empirical findings, and identify emerging challenges and opportunities for future research.
