Inclusivity and equity in survey research

Coordinator 1Ms Line Knudsen (National Centre for Social Research (NatCen))
Coordinator 2Dr Véronique Siegler (Office for National Statistics (UK))

Session Details

This session offers an opportunity for survey practitioners and methodologists to share experiences and reflect on how we can make our surveys, our survey data and our survey data analysis more accessible, inclusive and equitable.

Inclusive survey data is fundamental to producing valid, policy-relevant insights. As the data landscape evolves, new opportunities - and risk - emerge. A key aim of the session is to advance understanding of how inclusive survey methods can evolve alongside new data sources and computational tools, and to ensure that innovation strengthens - rather than weakens - representation and equity in social research.

We invite papers that explore both practical innovations and methodological developments associated with inclusive survey practice - including any that may not have worked as intended! We also particularly welcome contributions drawing on emerging tools and/or data systems where survey data are integrated with other data sources.

This includes, but is not limited to:
• Strategies for improving coverage and/or participation among underrepresented populations
• Designing and implementing accessible inclusive surveys
• Challenges in and strategies for designing questions that reflect diverse experiences, identities and circumstances and that work effectively across cultures, languages and population groups
• Combining survey and other data sources to enhance inclusivity (including non-traditional data sources)
• Strategies for weighting and analysing survey data for marginalised groups (including alongside other data sources)
• Addressing inclusivity and intersectionality in complex, linked, or high-dimensional datasets
• Ethical, governance, and/or transparency considerations in inclusive survey research

We welcome contributions from across academia, official statistics, and applied research.
