From Emergency to Longitudinal Survey Research: Studying Displaced Ukrainians Four Years On

Coordinator 1Mr YVES FRADIER (Retraité)
Coordinator 2Mr Jean-Philippe DECIEUX (Bonn University)

Session Details

Since 2022, the mass displacement of Ukrainians has prompted a wide range of survey initiatives across Europe, including rapid-response surveys, non-probability studies, and probability-based longitudinal panels. Four years after the start of the war, and with the EU’s Temporary Protection now extended until March 2028, many displaced Ukrainians are building more stable lives in Europe. As displacement shifts from an immediate humanitarian emergency to a longer-term, though still uncertain, reality, survey researchers face new methodological challenges: maintaining high-quality data collection, following increasingly mobile populations, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of survey infrastructures
This session invites contributions addressing methodological and substantive challenges in surveying displaced Ukrainian populations, including:

* Sampling and recruitment strategies for displaced populations, including probability-based and non-probability approaches, and their implications for coverage, representativeness, and data quality
* Panel maintenance, respondent engagement, attrition, and respondent tracing
* Surveying onward migration, return migration, and cross-border mobility
* Cross-national and comparative survey designs across diverse reception contexts
* Innovative methods for longitudinal data collection and data quality
* Ethical challenges in surveying populations experiencing prolonged uncertainty
* Integration of qualitative data (e.g., interviews, open-ended responses, photographs) with longitudinal quantitative surveys
* Lessons for building sustainable survey infrastructures for future conflict, crisis, and forced-displacement contexts
