Session Details

Probability-based online panels (PBOPs) are designed to balance scientific rigor with practical advantages. They retain probability-based sampling while combining web surveys, the dominant survey mode, with repeated measurement in a panel design.

PBOPs are subject to several methodological challenges, including potential bias of estimates arising from coverage and recruitment, nonresponse, attrition, panel conditioning, and measurement processes.

Against this background, submissions are invited on the evaluation of estimates from PBOPs, particularly comparisons with benchmark values based on administrative data, traditional probability-based surveys, and other high-quality reference sources. Also welcome are studies that assess the extent and sources of bias, including variation across estimates, population subgroups, and panel waves. Such evidence can clarify whether discrepancies are systematic, where they occur, and how they affect substantive conclusions drawn from panel data. The following topics are also suitable for this session:
• Assessing and reducing item and unit nonresponse
• Investigating response quality, including satisficing
• Evaluating sampling and incentive strategies in recruitment
• Comparing response quality between PBOPs and other research designs
• Assessing panel conditioning and nonresponse bias
• Applying machine learning and other predictive methods to any of the areas listed above
