Publishing in open-access methods journals: Pitfalls, practical tips, and views from the other side

Coordinator 1Dr Eva Aizpurua (University of Northern Iowa)

Session Details

Survey methodology is served by a growing number of open-access journals, which offer researchers and practitioners accessible routes to publication and readers free access to methodological work. Yet the knowledge needed to navigate them (e.g., how to match a paper to a journal, what editors look for, how to respond to reviews, what happens to a manuscript between submission and decision) is not always well understood.

This session brings together editors from four open-access survey methods journals (methods, data, analyses (mda), Survey Insights: Methods from the Field, Survey Practice, and Survey Research Methods) for a structured discussion aimed primarily at early career researchers, though relevant to anyone (considering) submitting to or reviewing for these outlets. The journals differ in scope, length conventions and readership, and the session uses those differences to make concrete what journal fit means in practice.

Contributions will address common reasons manuscripts are rejected before and after review, how to frame a methodological contribution for a practice-oriented versus a technical readership, the mechanics of editorial decision-making and peer review, responding constructively to reviewer comments and revise-and-resubmit decisions, and considerations specific to open-access publishing, including reproducibility expectations, data and code availability, and the reporting of AI-assisted work.

Discussion will be interactive, with time reserved for questions. Attendees should leave with a clearer sense of where their work fits, what editors and reviewers look for, and how to make the publication process less opaque.
