Advances in Small Area Estimation: Methodological and Applied Problems in the Field

Session Details

Small area estimation (SAE) has become an increasingly important methodological framework for producing reliable statistics for domains and populations for which conventional survey estimates are too imprecise or unavailable. The growing demand for timely, geographically detailed, and multidimensional statistics has stimulated substantial advances in SAE methodology, extending beyond traditional area-level and unit-level models.
This session brings together recent methodological developments and innovative methodological contributions and applications in SAE. Contributions may address advances in model specification, estimation, uncertainty quantification, spatial and temporal dependence, and the integration of multiple data sources.
The session also welcomes contributions on SAE in presence of new forms of data.
Beyond methodological development, the session invites empirical applications demonstrating how recent SAE advances can support official statistics, social research, and evidence-based policymaking. Contributions may focus on regional inequalities, vulnerable and underrepresented populations, Sustainable Development Goals, health, labour markets, migration, quality of life, or other domains where granular and reliable estimates are needed.
By bringing together methodological and applied perspectives, the session aims to showcase the current state of the art in SAE, identify emerging challenges, and stimulate discussion on future directions for producing robust, and policy-relevant small area statistics.
