A memory of ESRA

My first significant memory of ESRA was when Nicolas Sauger asked us if we cared to be involved with this international conference and I said ‘Yes, what is that about?’

I had of course already heard of ESRA, but wasn’t very familiar with the association’s activities. I’m a curious person, so here I am, I will see you soon and it’ll definitely be an unforgettable experience!

Paris as seen by a nature lover who doesn’t live in Paris

There are plenty of parks and gardens in Paris: Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, Parc Montsouris, Jardin de Pré-Catelan, Jardin du Luxembourg… you won’t have time to see them all. The one I keep returning to is Jardin des Plantes (Garden of plants 😊), in the 5th district. Beautiful trees and flowers outside, different colours and scents in every season, little ponds and hiding spots, and an array of impressive greenhouses with beautiful orchids, begonias, banana trees, cacti… There is also an alpine garden and a zoo!

Just next to it is the National Museum of Natural History, with its Galerie de l’Evolution, a showcase of the history of life on Earth containing fossils BIG and small and very realistic animals from all time periods, combined with VR experiences and so many things to see that you could easily forget time… but don’t be late for the conference!

P. Linh Nguyen

My best memory of ESRA

In 2017, I had the unique chance to attend both my first ESRA and WAPOR conference in Lisbon. I got to experience and learn how diverse, vibrant, and international our community is. How exciting that ten years later ESRA and WAPOR will again be organised in one location!

My tips on Paris

Both after living in inner and Greater Paris, my favourite (also family-friendly) spots are located along the Canal Saint-Martin and Canal de l’Ourcq (such the attractions and playgrounds within the Parc de la Villette). It is possible to walk even from the Campus Condorcet to the Canal Saint-Denis in Aubervilliers and then follow the canals until the Seine in the city centre, just make sure to inform yourself which side of the canal is the nicer one to take. And do explore the city by bike, you will be surprised how bike-friendly Paris has become and avoid any stress with public transportation (especially during rush hours). My culinary tip, which is on the cheaper side and not that well-known, is eating galettes, the salty version of crêpes from Brittany.

Matthieu Olivier

My first ESRA

The first time I attended ESRA was back in 2013, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where I was particularly impressed by a session on the use of eye-tracking. Unfortunately, I’ve never been able to put all I learned that day into practice…

My tips on Paris

My favorite park in Paris is the Jardin du Luxembourg, in the 6th arrondissement.

Although there aren’t many lawns where you can lie down, read against a tree, or have a picnic, there are plenty of different atmospheres: playgrounds for kids, tennis courts, people playing chess or pétanque, and more. You might even come face to face with a replica of the Statue of Liberty if you look hard enough!

Once I leave the garden, I like to grab a drink at a lively bar near the Panthéon, not far away, or enjoy a quiet coffee in the gardens of the Musée Bourdelle.

Alexia Ricard

My first ESRA

For me, unlike my colleagues, it’s a complete first: my first ESRA, and as a member of the organizing committee in my own city!

My tips on Paris

Living in the North of Paris, in the Goutte d’Or (one of the city’s last truly popular neighbourhoods), I can only encourage you to explore this area. And I have to tell you about my favourite restaurant: Colchide! Just outside the tourist circuits and close to Campus Condorcet (10 minutes by metro or bike), Colchide is a Georgian restaurant where you can try specialties like khachapuri and khinkali, enjoy plenty of vegetarian options, and discover Georgian wines (among the oldest winemaking traditions in the world). And because we also love Parisian landmarks, take a bike and grab an ice cream in front of Montmartre at Bachir, famous for its Lebanese achta ice cream. Finally, for a touch of culture, just a stone’s throw from Montmartre, head to the Musée de la Vie Romantique, which has recently reopened…

Ami Saji

My first ESRA

Although I’ve contributed to presentations at past ESRA conferences, I haven’t yet had the opportunity to attend one! I’m therefore very much looking forward to my first experience in Paris, where I hope to fully enjoy the event, connect with colleagues, exchange ideas, and gain new insights.

My tips on Paris

As someone based in the east of Paris, I’ll admit I’m slightly biased—this is one of my favourite parts of the city! It’s a side of Paris that, to me, feels more “lived-in” and less like the “typical” tourist experience. Here, you can wander along the canals, enjoy the many spacious and green parks (my personal favourite is Parc des Buttes-Chaumont!), and explore neighbourhoods that still have a village-like atmosphere.

What I also love is the incredible diversity of cultures and cuisines. You’ll find everything from small family-run restaurants to vibrant food spots/venues reflecting influences from all over the world, often just a few streets apart.

If you have some time before, during, and/or after the conference, I’d really encourage you to venture over and explore this part of the city. It’s not far from the conference venue and offers a great opportunity to discover a different, more local side of Paris!

Nicolas Sauger

My first ESRA

My first ESRA conference was ages ago… 2009 if I’m not wrong, in Warsaw. What struck me most at that time was to discover survey methodology as a discipline. It was really nice to finally find a community to join in the academic field.

Tips about Paris…

As many people working in Paris, I’ve not lived in Paris for long. Too little space, too many tourists! Yet, Paris still has all the charms you can imagine… Despite the huge changes the Marais area has undergone in the past years, Place des Vosges still has its unique atmosphere. From there, you can easily walk to the Musée Carnavalet, the official museum for the history of the city of Paris. The building is incredible!

Noémie Soullier

My first ESRA

My first ESRA conference was in 2017 in Lisbon. I was impressed by the amount of experiments dedicated to survey methodology. Some focus areas were strikingly new to me, such as the seasonality of response rates or attentiveness measures.

My tips on Paris

I love strolling through the cobbled streets of La Butte aux Cailles, discovering the works of renowned street artists, and enjoying the peace and quiet of the narrow streets by day, or the hustle and bustle of the outdoor cafés in the evening.
