About Zagreb

Zagreb is the capital and the largest city of Croatia.  It has a rich history dating from the Roman times, and is an increasingly popular European tourist destination.  It offers varied architecture, a wide variety of fascinating museums, outdoor cafés and parks, culture, arts, music, and gastronomy. We think it will make a great location for ESRA 2019!

Further information about visiting Zagreb is available here: You can also find out more about Zagreb, including information about Discounted Tours and Guided Visits for conference delegates on our Discovering Zagreb page.  Informaton about accommodation options can be found below.

Travel Information

All ESRA attendees are responsible for making their own travel arrangements and obtaining necessary travel documents (e.g., visas).

Croatia is a member of the European Union.  Citizens of EU countries, the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand do not need visas to visit Croatia. Visitors can visit Croatia for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. For other countries, please check the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' website for visa requirements for Croatia. If you do need a visa, please contact the Croatian Embassy in your country for more information.

Travel and Health Insurance: Please note that the Organizing Committee will not accept liability for any kind of damage, losses or injuries occurring to persons or personal belongings during the conference. Be sure to organise suitable travel and health insurance.

Zagreb can be reached by air (Zagreb Airport is the largest and busiest international airport in Croatia) and by rail, via several international rail and bus connections.

Arriving and Getting Around: Zagreb Airport to the City Centre

The taxi drive to the city centre will cost you 100 -120 HRK (i.e. around 15 EUR, but it’s best to check with the driver or order a ride in advance). (association of individual drivers – the oldest and largest taxi provider in Zagreb) (lower-price range provider) (hybrid and LPG geared vehicles)  (official taxi operator for Zagreb Airport - can be expensive!)

Airport Shuttle:

A one-way ticket on the Airport Transport Company bus costs 30 Kuna (i.e. around 4 EUR). The Shuttle operates between the Airport and the Zagreb Central Bus Terminal and the service is organised so that it follows the airport timetable.

After getting to the Central Bus Terminal, you can catch a tram. The tram station is right in front of the Central Bus Terminal.

Local Bus Line:

You can also take public bus line no. 290. The line has more than 15 stops, so be prepared for at least 30 minutes drive. However, this is the cheapest option and you can buy a 60-minute ticket from the driver for 10 Kuna (approx. 1.4 EUR). Please prepare local currency, Kuna. Find out more about the bus line's route and timetable.

This bus will take you to Kvaternikov trg (the last stop). There, you can take a tram to your reserved accommodation.

Local Transport in Zagreb

The public transport services (buses and trams) in Zagreb are carried out by ZET (public bus company). Ten tram tickets are included in the conference fee and you will receive them at the conference registration desk. One ticket is valid for 30 minutes– that’s more than enough time for you to reach the Conference venue from the city centre. If you need more tickets you can buy them from the driver (in the vehicle, this will cost you more) or at a newsstand (a cheaper option). You must validate your paper ticket on the tram: there are machines for validating tickets installed near the first door of the vehicle (in low floor trams, they are also installed at the rear door). You can also use the same tickets for the local buses. More information on Zagreb tram and bus lines is available here.   Information on ticket types and prices is available here.
